How James Patrick Photography used event videography, interview production, and cinematic storytelling to elevate the SMPS Arizona Phelix Awards experience in Phoenix, Arizona.
Awards ceremonies are about recognition, but the most meaningful recognition often comes from the people who work alongside the recipient every day.
For the SMPS Arizona Phelix Awards, I partnered with the Arizona chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) to create a series of surprise award presentation videos designed to make three individual award presentations more personal, emotional, and memorable.
The project combined Phoenix event videography, corporate interview production, documentary-style storytelling, and event highlight video production into one comprehensive video package.
The result was three personalized award videos presented immediately before each winner was called on stage, along with a cinematic event sizzle reel that SMPS Arizona could use to promote the Phelix Awards and future events.
The Client: SMPS Arizona
SMPS is a professional organization serving marketing and business development professionals working in the architecture, engineering, construction, and related professional services industries.
The SMPS Arizona Chapter hosts events throughout the Phoenix area, including its annual Phelix Awards, which recognizes outstanding professionals and firms within the AEC industry.
For this year’s awards ceremony, SMPS wanted to elevate the attendee experience while also creating video content that could continue working for the organization after the event was over.
That meant the goal wasn’t simply to document what happened.
The goal was to create an experience.
The Challenge: Make the Awards Personal Without Giving Away the Surprise
Three individual awards were selected for personalized video presentations:
- Up & Comer of the Year
- Firm Leader of the Year
- Business Developer of the Year
The concept was simple but required careful coordination.
Before each winner was announced, a video would play featuring their colleagues and team members congratulating them on the recognition and sharing personal stories and anecdotes about why they deserved the award.
There was one major problem:
The award winners couldn’t know we were filming the videos.
That meant the production had to be coordinated quietly between SMPS Arizona, the participating firms, their employees, and my production schedule.
I coordinated with SMPS and staff at two different firms to arrange interview sessions at their offices in Phoenix.
The employees knew why we were there.
The winners did not.
That allowed us to capture genuine reactions, stories, congratulations, and personal observations that would have been much harder to create if the recipients had been involved in the production.
Filming the Surprise Award Videos
Each interview session was designed to gather more than a simple congratulations.
I wanted the videos to answer questions such as:
Why is this person deserving of this award?
What makes them different from their peers?
What have they contributed to the organization?
What personal experiences demonstrate their leadership, character, or impact?
The interviews gave us the raw material to build a narrative around each recipient.
All three award videos were filmed locally in Phoenix using Sony cinema cameras, including the Sony FX3 and FX30.
The goal was to create footage that felt polished and cinematic while still retaining the authenticity of employees speaking about people they genuinely respected.
And because the videos were going to be played in front of a live audience, the storytelling had to work quickly.
We didn’t have several minutes to explain someone’s entire career.
We had to create an emotional arc that could immediately establish who the person was, why their colleagues valued them, and why this particular recognition mattered.
Turning Interviews Into Stories
Once filming was complete, I edited each award video separately.
Rather than simply cutting together a series of congratulations, I structured each video as a short narrative.
One person might introduce an important quality about the recipient.
Another might tell a story that demonstrated it.
Someone else might explain the impact that person had on their team.
The individual comments were edited together so that the video gradually built a case for why the recipient was the right person to receive the award.
Each video also received its own music track to establish the appropriate tone and help create momentum leading into the live presentation.
The objective was to make the audience feel like they were getting a glimpse into the recipient’s professional life that they wouldn’t have otherwise experienced during the awards ceremony.
Then came the payoff.
The video would end.
The recipient’s name would be announced.
And they would walk onto the stage to accept the award.
From Video Production to Live Event Experience
The three award videos were only one component of the project.
I was also on site during the Phelix Awards to capture lifestyle and event b-roll throughout the evening.
Rather than treating this as traditional event documentation, I approached the footage as a visual representation of the experience of attending an SMPS Arizona event.
That meant capturing:
- Attendees interacting and networking
- Conversations and candid moments
- The energy of the venue
- Award presentations
- Reactions from attendees
- Speakers and presenters
- Details throughout the event
- Behind-the-scenes moments
- The overall atmosphere of the Phelix Awards
The footage was then edited into a fast-moving event sizzle reel designed to communicate the energy and experience of the event.
One Event. Multiple Video Assets.
An important part of the project was making sure the content had value beyond the night of the awards ceremony.
The final event sizzle reel was delivered in two formats.
Vertical Video for Social Media
A portrait version was created specifically for platforms such as Instagram Reels and other vertical-first social channels.
This format gives SMPS Arizona a piece of content that can be used to generate attention and engagement around the event while the experience is still fresh.
Horizontal Video for Web and YouTube
A horizontal version was also produced for use on websites, YouTube, presentations, and other traditional video placements.
This gives SMPS Arizona a longer-lasting marketing asset that can be used to showcase the Phelix Awards beyond social media.
In other words, the project wasn’t simply about creating videos for one evening.
It created a library of reusable marketing collateral.
The Technology
All of the award interviews and event footage were captured using Sony cinema cameras, including the Sony FX3 and FX30.
The entire project, from production through editing, was handled by James Patrick here in Phoenix.
Keeping the production and post-production under one creative direction allowed the visual style and storytelling to remain consistent across the award videos and event sizzle reel.
The Result
The three personalized award videos played immediately before each recipient was called on stage to receive their Phelix Award.
Instead of simply hearing a name announced, attendees first heard directly from the people who worked alongside the recipient.
That added context and emotion to the recognition.
The project also gave SMPS Arizona a professionally produced event sizzle reel that could be used to promote the Phelix Awards, showcase the organization, and build anticipation for future SMPS events.
Most importantly, SMPS Arizona was extremely happy with the results.
The project demonstrated how strategic event videography can do more than document an event.
It can become part of the event itself.
Why Event Videography Matters for Professional Services Organizations
For organizations in the AEC and professional services industries, events are an important opportunity to build relationships, recognize accomplishments, and reinforce the organization’s brand.
But once the event ends, much of that energy disappears.
Professional event video can extend the life of that experience.
A well-produced event video can be used to:
- Promote future events
- Increase attendance for upcoming programs
- Showcase award winners
- Demonstrate organizational culture
- Create social media content
- Provide content for websites and email marketing
- Give sponsors additional exposure
- Strengthen the organization’s brand
- Create a visual record of important milestones
For an organization like SMPS Arizona, that makes event videography more than documentation.
It becomes marketing content.
A Phoenix Event Video Production Built Around the Experience
The Phelix Awards project brought together several different types of video production: confidential interview filming, corporate storytelling, awards presentation videos, event coverage, and social media content creation.
But the strategy behind all of it was the same:
Create content that makes people feel something and gives the organization something it can continue using.
The award videos made the recipients’ recognition more meaningful in the room.
The sizzle reel captured the energy of the event for people who weren’t there.
And the different video formats gave SMPS Arizona content it could continue using across social media, its website, YouTube, and future marketing efforts.
All of it was filmed and produced here in Phoenix, Arizona.
