Readers overwhelmingly say AI in media should be labeled. So why aren’t magazines telling us when reality isn’t real?
Recently, Brainz Magazine ran a cover that, to anyone looking closely, appeared to be an AI-generated rendering rather than a photograph of their cover subject. When the publication shared the image on Instagram, I commented on the post asking why they chose an AI rendering over an actual photograph.
It’s worth noting that Brainz Magazine is a sponsored content publication, where people pay to be featured. That means the person on the cover likely paid for the feature and supplied the AI-generated image themselves. The magazine appears to have accepted it without clarifying that the image wasn’t real.
When I raised the question publicly, the person depicted became defensive, claiming it was simply an overly photoshopped photo. Later, those comments were deleted. Out of curiosity, I ran the Brainz Magazine image through AI analysis software. The result: an unequivocal confirmation that the image was AI-generated, not photographed.
But, this conversation isn’t really about the cover model in question. Rather, it’s about what it means when a publication runs an AI rendering instead of a real photograph, and what that does to our perception of reality in the media.
Now, this of course isn’t an isolated case. Another sponsored-content magazine, Soeleish Magazine, also ran a cover featuring an AI rendering instead of a photo.
It all brings us to a bigger question: Are AI images misleading to audiences? And if they are, should the media be required to label them?
When I ran a poll on Instagram, 93% of respondents said yes, that magazines should be legally required to disclose when they use AI-generated renderings instead of actual photographs.
I think back to my early days as a newspaper photographer. The rules on image editing were strict. Nothing could alter the context of the image. Minimal changes, such as adjusting exposure, sharpening, or converting to black and white, were fine. But cropping out important elements or changing saturation in a way that shifted meaning? Absolutely not.
Trust is the foundation of journalism. Lose that trust, and you lose your audience. Over the past few years, that trust has been eroding as editorial standards blur with advertising and sponsored content.
The federal communications commission (FCC) already requires that sponsored placements be labeled as such, though those disclosures can be buried in small print or hidden in the table of contents. But there are no clear rules for AI imagery in editorial contexts.
Yes, magazines have more creative leeway than newspapers, and photo editing has long been part of the visual toolkit. But when it comes to AI, the stakes feel higher. AI doesn’t just retouch an image—it can create something entirely fictional while presenting it as real. That shapes how we define beauty, success, and even truth itself.
We’ve already seen it. A recent Vogue advertisement featured a completely AI-generated model. As one person on X put it: “Wow, as if beauty expectations weren’t unrealistic enough, here comes AI to make them impossible. Even models can’t compete.”
The FCC is beginning to address AI in political advertising, requiring disclosure when AI-generated images or audio are used. But beyond politics, there’s little movement toward regulation, especially with current funding cuts and deregulation trends.
As both a photographer and publisher, I find this troubling. The gap between what audiences can trust and what media delivers is only widening. Without clearer rules, that divide will keep growing.
So here’s the question.
If AI-generated imagery is reshaping our understanding of what’s real, should the media have a responsibility—not just a choice—to tell us when what we’re seeing isn’t real?
